Less Worry – CHEAPER IDEAS with Traditional Herbal Plants

Tradition Health Program is a program of the Department of Health as to promote the use of traditional herbal plants. It was 1992 when former Health Secretary Senator Juan M. Flavier introduced the traditional Medicine Program by virtue of Administrative Order No. 12 and drafted the law by early 1994. In 1997, President Fidel V. Ramos appreciated the potential curing substance of the herbal plants thus it will contribute of the aspect of health and economy among individual.

Republic Act 8423 otherwise known as Traditional and Alternative Medicine Act of 1997 gave grow to the establishment of Philippine institute of Traditional and alternative Health care- a government owned and controlled corporation under to the DOH to answer the needs of the people on health through the provision and delivery of traditional and alternative health care products, services and technologies that have been proven safe, effective and affordable.

But before you proceed with making a decoction, please take note with this guidelines:
1. Buy herbs that are grown organically
2. Medicinal parts of plants must be harvested on sunny mornings. Avoid picking leaves, fruits or nuts during and after heavy rainfall.
3. Pick mature leaves, fruits, flower or seed since young part contain lesser contents.

Bawang (garlic) Allium sativum
  • Reduces cholesterol
  • Control Blood Pressure
    • Can be toasted, roasted, soaked in vinegar for 30 minutes or blanched in boiled water for 15 minutes
Ulasimang bato (pansit-pansitan) Peperomia pellucida
  • For arthritis and gout
    • 1 ½ cup leaves 2 glasses of water.
    • Boil for 15 to 20 minutes.
    • Strain, let cool and drink a cup after meals (3 times day).
Bayabas (Guava) Psidium guajava
  • Antiseptic
  • For tooth decay and gum infection
  • Diarrhea
    • Pound a small piece and apply to affected area
    • As gargle for toothache: Chopped the leaves and let it boiled for 15 minutes (low fire,don’t cover the pot)
Lagundi (5-leaved chaste tree) Vitex negundo
  • Relief of cough and asthma
    • Decoction: boil raw fruits or leaves for 15 minutes until 1 glass remains. Cool and strain.
Yerba Buena (Peppermint) Clinopodium douglasii
  • analgesic
    • Chopped leaves boil in 2 glasses for 15 minutes. Drink 1 part every three hours or pound the leaves and apply to affected body area.
Sambong (Blumea camphora) Blumea balsamifera
  • diuretics
  • Chopped leaves are boiled for 15 minutes until a glassful remains. Drink 1 part three times daily
Akapulko (bayabas-bayabasan) Cassia alata
  • Antifungal
  • Fresh matured leaves are pounded. Apply as soap to the affected area 1-2 times a day
Niyug-niyogan (Chinese honey suckle) Quisqualis indica L.
  • Anti-helminthic
  • The seeds are taken 2 hours after supper. If no worms are expelled, the dose may be repeated after 1 week. Not to be given to children below 4 years old.
  • Dose: Adult (8-10 seeds), 7-12 years old (6-7 seeds), 6-8 years old (5-6 seeds) and 4-5 years old (4-5 seeds)
Tsaang Gubat Ehretia microphylla LamCarmona retusa
  • Diarrhea and Stomachache
  • Chopped leaves are boiled in 2 glasses of water for 15 minutes until 1 glass remains. Cool and strain.
Ampalaya (bitter gourd or bitter melon) Momordica charantia
  • Lower Blood Sugar levels
  • Chopped 6 tablespoons are boiled in 2 glasses of water for 15 minutes under low fire. Take 1/3 cup three times a day
