by: Ruby Lyn Rodriguez

On an online social website, some nurses claimed that Davao City is currently an unsafe place. This was due to the Marjorie Kwan killing who was blast with a shot by riding gunmen last Saturday around 11:30 a.m. She was a 23 years old Chinese-Filipino registered nurse.

According to www.sunstar.com.ph, by Ben O. Tesiorna and Nelson Bagafuro, 1, 649 likes was posted last Sunday calling for justice for Kwan on Facebook.

Dabawenyo nurses are now frightened for this unpleasant incident and feel unsecure. Many commentary posts arise on the Justice for Marjorie Kwan page and one of the posts was from Andre Thadeus Piccio. “It’s time to once again cleanse the city streets with criminals”, he says.

In addition, Joy Sanz Confesor posts a comment on Camille Benjamin Remoroza’s Facebook page, a friend of the victim. “I think ang mga killers nya are the (I think her killers are the) same people who robbed and shot a nurse at Gem Village in Ma-a last month,” she uttered.

There were many new nurses from Davao City that passed the recent nursing board examination. I asked some of the new board passers from Davao City about their comment with this incident.

Zamille Bernasol, a registered nurse who recently passed the board exam last December 2011. She expressed fear about this incident and fearful that she may encounter these bad gunmen.

I claimed that this incident dazed and shaken the lives of numerous nurses. I would like to express that this treatment for nurses should not last longer, it should be stopped. Nurses bestow their jam-packed blast of energy in working just to saves lives yet many bad people will just take the lives of nurses. I should say that the security in Davao City should be more tighten in order that we nurses and even ordinary people will feel assure that nothing will happen anytime and anywhere we go.

Furthermore, I also call for justice for this nurse and to all nurses that was treated badly. It is so ironic that the one who saves lives will be the one who will be killed like this.

Hence, I look forward to that we nurses will feel safe in this city especially that we do enclose a nightshifts duty. As well as not merely in Davao City but all over the country so that we can perform our jobs efficiently and effectively without any fear of being compromised by these bad people.

Nursing is a science and an art that focus on promoting quality of life

cnatrainingweb.com

throughout their life experiences from birth to care at the end of life. It is a profession on assisting individuals, families and communities to achieve and maintain optimal health and functioning.

Nursing profession is a vital and indispensable part of the society. It is guided with moral ethics, researches and studies, and altruistic behavior. Being part of the nursing crew, it carries the professional responsibilities and public accountability. Each country nursing practice is regulated by its own laws within the national and territorial boards of nursing. Thus, these revolve the nursing theories and practice and experience in clinical skills.

Nursing is the most diverse of all health professions. It is a universal role that appears in some form in all cultures.

In USA, there are so many fields of nursing you can be. They offer several specialties like: Certified Forensic Nurse, Endoscopy Nurse, Neonatal Nurse, and Legal Consultant Nurse. You have to pass certain exams of your chosen specialty. The salary of this kind of specialty is very high compared to an ordinary ward nurse. That is why, American Nurses are looked up in this country.

However in Europe, the most popular opportunity for nurses is what they call continental travel nurse. There are agencies who will be the one to accommodate the schedule and place you in the desirable location you want. Continental Travel Nurse will always be a phone call away when you’re ready to offer your valuable skills to another hospital. You can also relish the city you are based in during your three month contract, renew for another three months, build up a kitty of money and then take off on a three month or longer excursion around Europe. Isn’t it nice?

As of 2011, in China, it has been reported that Chinese Nurses has a better chance of finding jobs than doctors. Nurses have no assistance in the hospitals, they just reckon on families to feed and bath the patients. Moreover, for ICU Nurses, they just update one family member about the patient’s health progress. Furthermore, nurse retention remains high without any kind of self-scheduling, weekend work hours plan, or flex time.

In the Philippines, it is known to be the nest of nurses. Filipino nurses are known to be caring and very positive in the profession they chose. They are highly priced because we can speak English and has a reputation of giving tender loving care. The comments of other countries about Filipino nurses is that, nurses from the Philippines are so determined, initiative and don’t complain a lot.

I think it is not about the nationality of what it takes to be a nurse. But how you live on to become a true and dignified angel in the sickroom.

Nurse’s primary concern thought by many that we just function to preserve the human body to its optimum health status. It’s a common perception of those individuals who are not in the field of nursing. However, in my case as a nursing graduate, my primary concern is on how to take good care of my patients.

I could say that caring and compassion work hand in hand. These attributes are said to be the best methods to make the patients comfortable. Caring and being compassionate are suppose to be the tasks that should be highlighted in the nursing profession.

Dame Julie Moore, Chief Executive of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, uttered at the Nursing Standard that nurses simply do not call for academic skills but also clothe themselves with caring and compassion (Smith, 2012).

A nurse should not just be academically dressed up but should as well demonstrate care and compassion. Caring for the patients gives a motivating power of healing. It seems that they will be healed emotionally and also spiritually. It loosens their mental agony and brings stress-free ambiance in their environment. Caring brings a unique image to nursing profession.

In addition, being a compassionate individual also gives an edge to nursing from other professions. I could say it’s not easy to be compassionate to the patients. For instance in one of my hospital exposures, I encounter many patients from the oncology ward who try to ask me several questions regarding their health status or if not them, their relatives or loved ones. As a BSN graduate, it’s trouble-free to deal with these kinds of scenarios especially if you do have a wide knowledge towards their health conditions. And putting yourself on their shoes so called empathy is really the best way to deal with the situation.

As nurses we should be aware that there are three components that we should acquire and should be implementing in the workplace. These three components are correlated to the qualities of leadership. One of these components is to have the conceptual skills. This quality gives a nurse a way on how she/he utilizes her/his critical thinking. Second quality is to have a suitable interpersonal skill. This is how the nurse mingles with her/his patients or co-workmates. Uplifting yourself with good interpersonal skills gives you an edge to be aware of those people from different walks of life. Lastly, the technical skill which increases the nurse’s self-esteem. This skill is on how you make use of your knowledge towards doing basic procedures like how to do bed bath, administering medications and the like.

Hence, these qualities should be possessed by nurses in caring to their patients. Nurses should clothe themselves with compassion, caring attitude and fortify themselves with the three components which are the conceptual, interpersonal and technical skills.

blog.aynrandcenter.org

dreaming to fly over abroad. Hundreds of registered nurses all over Philippines wanted to breathe the fresh air in USA. Nevertheless, the jam-packed of licensed nurses as of 2011 has become the downfall of finding a job in USA. Not only that, the global crisis also overridden the hiring of nurses in all parts of the world.

Nowadays, the rate of taking NCLEX is slowing down in the Philippines. According to the statistics of America’s National Council of State Boards of Nursing that, as of 2011, only 5,630 Filipinos take the NCLEX exam compared to 2007 nurses which is around 21,499.

In 2005, out of the 21,500 foreign-trained registered nurses who sat for the Certification Program Nurse Qualifying Exam, administered by the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS), 55% were educated in the Philippines. It is a big and great opportunity of every registered Filipino nurses working in America during this tempo. There are many nurses who become successful and make over a better future of their family and career. One of these examples is, Rosario May Mayor, MSN, RN, a Filipino nurse in America, and now she is the director and chief of staff of the Bronx VA Medical Center. Presently, she is the president of the Philippine Nurses Association of America (PNAA).

We know that during the rise in value of nurses, agencies help nurses to go in America and find and secure jobs for them. You just have to pay and wait for their call. That’s what they call, fly now, and pay later. But because of the turning point, a lot of agencies are having hard time in finding nursing opportunities and jobs in America. They admit that there is really a shortage of nursing stroke of luck as of the moment.

Recently, nurses are taking their chances in other countries like New Zealand, Middle East, Australia, Canada and Japan. Darzel Balani, a registered nurse, confirms that it is better for her to work in the Middle East than pursuing her career in America. She says that, she is having difficulties in finding a job in America.

But here’s what’s unique: Even if America will not loose in hiring Filipino nurses, nurses always think that dreams do really come true. There are more opportunities coming for those nurses who wish their luck in other country. Well, break a leg hopeful nurses.

It is usually a basic routine job for nurses to prepare medication everyday. They are fun of aspiring medications such as chemotherapy drugs or sterilizing chemicals and have it in correct measurements before giving it to patients. But what most nurses don’t know is that these medications specifically chemotherapy drugs would harm pregnant nurse. Why and How?

It is raised in a research by National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) that pregnant nurses who handle and work in chemotherapy drugs will lead to a miscarriage. NIOSH is the organization that provides safe-handling recommendations for workers who use chemicals. For the reason that chemotherapy drugs mainly target rapidly dividing cells, such as those in a tumor — or a fetus, they have been a concern for pregnant women, who come into contact with them

The abovementioned institute conducted a study. They somehow surveyed 7,500 nurses who had pregnancy during their first trimester. The nurses were asked to remember how often they worked with certain chemicals or equipment, such as X-rays, anesthesia, anti-cancer drugs and disinfectants, during each trimester. One out of every 10 nurses ceases her pregnancy before 20 weeks. Meanwhile, among nurses who handled chemotherapy drugs for more than an hour a day, that number was twice- about two out of every 10 nurses turned out to lose her pregnancy.

Nurses who gave patients X-rays had a somewhat higher risk of miscarriage too, about thirty percent larger than nurses who didn’t work with X-rays.

And nurses who handled sterilizing agents, such as ethylene oxide or formaldehyde, more than an hour a day also had a doubled risk of miscarriage, but only during the second trimester.

The miscarriages during the second trimester might result from a toxin affecting the mother’s ability to carry the baby, whereas a miscarriage in the first trimester suggests the toxin is affecting the fetus. A researcher said that it’s difficult to clinch the cause of the miscarriages seen in the study because the researchers don’t know which chemicals each woman had contact with, and for how long they are exposed.

The study only drags a hitch between the chemicals and the miscarriages, but does not prove that the drugs caused the women to lose their pregnancies.

Many professors and organizations utter that there is lack of understanding and following safety guidelines.

In the Philippines, nurses and other hospital teams should always review all safety precautions to ensure one’s health especially the unborn child.

Several myths has been circulating around that donating blood can make you

inventorspot.com

weak, feel low, painful procedure, feels nausea and vomiting and so forth. Well, none of these are true that is why there are called MYTHS- fallacy, delusion, superstition and apologue. What is the truth behind blood donation?

According to Philippine Red Cross, Community Health and Nursing Services should strengthen in dealing with blood donation. Nurses should be the primary advocators in mounting and empowering in giving blood to those in need.

We all know Filipinos easily believe things – that could be factual or hearsay. But we should refine that kind of mentality. Now, nurses specifically those Community Health Nurses will be the one to educate each Filipinos about blood donation.

A girl asks me if she is going to donate her blood, will she feel low after. I immediately answer, “NO!” The thread of truth is that our body replenish body fluids and within three months of regeneration of red blood cells to donate more blood.

See? Hearsay doesn’t help either way around.

Here are more facts about blood donating.

1. You can donate blood frequently.

2. Your body’s immune system will not be affected.

3. It will not fluctuate your blood pressure and sugar level. (exception to the fact: hypertensive and diabetic patients)

4. It will just take 30 minutes.

5. Only 18-60 years old can donate blood.

6. Regular donation does not affect one’s body weight.

Community Health Nurses has the burden to emphasize the reality of blood donation especially in the vulnerable communities. For nurses to become better and more efficient, they can volunteer in the Philippine Red Cross. They have a program to teach and improve community health nurses. They offer trainings to equip knowledge and skills among qualified trainees and volunteers to provide quality health care.

That is why, this a good battle for nurses who can really help people not only to educate them but also they can help in saving thousand of Filipino lives. Nowadays, many children and adults in the hospital are in need for blood. Lots of them are dying because they cannot find the same blood type. We have to help one another.

The PRC always accepts blood donation. Just inquire the nearest Philippine Red Cross Service or you can email them at prc@redcross.org.ph.

We have received a gift and we will keep giving back because the need is great and the supply is not.

One of the branches of medicine and nursing which Filipino nurses let slip from

hartforcenter.uams.edu

their memories is Geriatric nursing. Nurses look into more in finding nine-to-five in hospitals, clinics, schools and companies. We should try to give again retrospection to this kind of angelic and virtuous profession. We have to uphold again that Geriatric nursing is a noble and very meritorious job.

Geriatric nursing focuses on aging and elderly patients who stand in need for different types of care. It deals with clinical, preventive, rehabilitative and social aspects of health and illness in the elderly.

In the Philippines, nurses care elderly patients who are mostly above 70 years old with some acute and chronic diseases. Our elderly patients usually suffer from dementia, osteoporosis, falls and fractures, malnutrition, depression and even urinary problems. Therefore, nurses need to assist them for their daily activities.

In working with an older patient, a geriatric nurse will assess the patient’s mental status and cognitive (thinking) skills, understand patient’s acute and chronic health issues, discuss common health concerns, such as falls, incontinence, changing sleep patterns and sexual issues, organize medications, educate the patient about personal safety and disease prevention, explain and recommend adjustments to the patient’s medication regimen to ensure adherence and link the patient with local resources as needed. But the paramount of being a geriatric nurse is to give emotional support and companionship to restore and maintain their wellbeing. It is an elbow grease of every individual to render love as what they receive by their respective families.

Many long term health care facilities are looking for nurses who are dedicated and determined to render their service for elders. These facilities are mainly located in the cities and it is founded with kind-hearted sponsors.

There is also home base care which carries a good salary since most of these families are rich. It depends on the contract if they wanted you to have an 8 hour shift of working.

Gerontology Nurses Association of the Philippines (GNAP) is a Philippine Society of Geriatric Medicine (PSGM)-accredited organization for nurses with special interest in gerontology. It conducts geriatric institutions visitation and has a mission to empower the dignity of an elderly. This organization is recognized by the Philippine Nurses Association. Being a member of this organization, a nurse can be more knowledgeable and able to excel in this kind of specialty.

Geriatric nurse careers have a very promising outlook. Get started now.

Remember, “No person was ever honored for what he received. He was honored for what he gave.” – Calvin Coolidge

We cannot deny that most of the Nursing Licensure Examination (NLE) takers last December 2011 have heightened anxiety level at this point. Few more days and the much awaited list of new registered nurses will be released. Out of curiosity, I interviewed Ms. Rachel Yvonne Ocampo Cabacungan, one of the nursing board exam takers, about how she faced the challenging test which most of you could relate to. So here it goes.

1) How did you prepare for the NLE Board Exam 2011?

Well, I enrolled in a Review Center (Mind’s Nest). I made sure I attend the class everyday, it kind’a helps build up confidence as the exam was fast approaching in a few months. Of course, Study. I’m not really the type of student who review notes, but at that moment, I realized the importance of reading.

2) Were you confident in taking the test?

I can’t say I was really confident, but I made sure i wasn’t too anxious. As I approached my testing center, it felt like it was just a normal day as I was walking towards my school. But when I received my answer sheets, I was shaking but i managed it. Although, I really can’t remember if I shaded the Set in NP2

3) Were there instances that you felt something could intervene from passing it? Like any glitches while taking it?

Aside from forgetting the part if I shaded the set in NP2 or not . When I was in the middle of the NP3 exam, my hands started to sweat. so i stopped shading and just read the questions again for like, ahm 10 minutes. Oh! and Right at NP5, I finished the exam 1 hour before the exam ends, and I think I didn’t use my time wisely foe that matter. (sigh)

4) Which part of the examination you consider difficult?

I consider NP5 most difficult, i really asked myself ” Asa man gikan ni nga mga question?” A lot of different review centers said that NP5 was the easiest for them. but for me, Ugh! I don’t even wanna think about it.

5) Were there questions which you never encountered during your review days?

Some of the questions were somewhat similar to those I encountered in the review center. Some were, I don’t know – bizarre?

6) Were the questions relevant to our profession?

Right now, I couldn’t really remember much of the questions back there. But yes, as Nurses are flexible, or should be as they say. It was relevant I guess.

7) Do you believe that the examination gauged your knowledge in nursing?

In the Review Center, we learned things of what we should do in the actual setting, a review instructor said that the NLE was a measurement if we were ready to work, and not if how smart we are. Did I even answer that question?

8)What did you do right after the test?

Right after the test? Doing something at the end each Nursing Practice gives me the Humor – Superstitions – I was kicking my chair right after I stand and about to submit my questionnaire and answer sheet. I could sometimes find the next student sitting behind me freaked out. (might be scared na “matamaan siya ng upuan sa lakas ng pagkakasipa ko”)

9) What are your activities while waiting for the examination result?

I went home eventually in our neighborhood even if I didn’t really felt like doing so. I tried to submit applications online and received some calls but then my mom wouldn’t allow me to go elsewhere – gusto niyang mag yaya ako sa mga pinsan ko. My mom loves to dictate things I should or should not do – or else I’ll find my clothes/things outside our balcony Till this day, I’m still a big Nanny.. ugh.. so boring and sedentary…

10) What are your plans after passing the test?

After the results come out, I don’t know really. Maybe it depends. If I pass, my mom would decide; If I don’t I will find a job of course. But If I get to choose, I want to work to accommodate myself for the training required. My mom really don’t get the idea why I have to undergo such, for her passing was already enough to have a job.

Thank You
